Outside of Chicago many airports offer a more personal spotting experience. Smaller regional and municipal airports are a heaven to the general aviation enthusiasts and smaller commuter traffic.

Interesting airports to visit around Illinois.

-Greater Rockford Airport, Rockford. Big UPS base. You will find 727 and DC-8 freighters sitting on the ramp. Airport has a small modern terminal however at this time there is no scheduled airline service.

-DuPage Country, West Chicago. In Chicago's West/NW suburbs lies DuPage County airport. Lots of general aviation and business jets.

-Scott AFB, by St. Louis. Scott AFB is across from St. Louis in Illinois. Good for spotting military traffic.

-Quad Cities Airport, Quad Cities. On the Illinois-Iowa border Quad cities is inauguarating its Chicago Express/ATA Connection service.

-Springfield/Capital City Airport, Springfield. Lots of business traffic, general aviation included.

These are just some of the airports. There are at least 2 airports/landing strips in every county. Something to see everywhere.
